Avoidance has often been my coping mechanism, but even when I avoid the source of anxiety, my body and mind remain tense. The more I habitually avoid, the more my body holds onto that tension, creating a cycle where avoidance amplifies discomfort and the urge to escape. However, when I finally break that cycle and confront what I’ve been avoiding, I often discover that the anxiety was not as threatening as it seemed. This realization brings a profound shift in my body—from tension to relief, from fear to calmness.
This sculpture captures that pivotal moment of transformation, symbolizing the journey from anxiety to relief. I connected this overcoming of avoidance to stepping out into the morning light and feeling a refreshing breeze—an awakening that fills me with readiness and a sense of endless possibilities for the day ahead.
The design reflects this shift: the back of the hand is rough, representing the struggle and tension of avoidance. As it passes through the window, it softens, reaching out to gently touch a flower—symbolizing the relief and renewal that comes from moving beyond the hurdle.
